The small village of Arès is located north of the Arcachon basin, between Andernos and Lège Cap Ferret.
Its small oyster-farming village with white and blue huts is typical of the basin. It is the starting point for the Prés Salés, a marshy area at the bottom of the basin, ideal for walking, hiking or observing the local fauna and flora.
If you follow the coastal path along the basin, you will reach Andernos via the Quinconces nature reserve.
Next to Arès is Andernos les Bains. Andernos les Bains is a town of over 12,000 inhabitants, with 1 cinema, 1 indoor public swimming pool, 1 skate park, 1 municipal stadium, several playgrounds, a climbing wall, a laser game... You can stroll along the pedestrian street to go shopping, eat an ice cream or a crêpe, walk along the pier (the longest in France, offering a unique view of the Bassin, the Tchanquées huts, the bird island, etc.) or eat oysters in one of the many tasting rooms in the port.
Not forgetting the Domaine de Certes (Audenge), the Teich bird sanctuary, Aqualand water park (Gujan Mestas), Parc de le Coccinelle and Kid parc Gujan mestras).
One hour south, you cannot come to the Basin without visiting Arcachon and the winter town, then climbing the Dune du Pilat.
30 minutes to the north, you can visit the Cap Ferret peninsula, with its 10 villages, oyster ports, Cap Ferret lighthouse, panoramic view of the Pointe du Cap Ferret, Frédhélian ice cream parlours, Bélisaire pier, little train, etc.
The extensive network of cycle paths in Gironde allows you to explore the basin by bike, reaching the ocean beaches, Cap Ferret or even Arcachon for the more motivated.
The Uba sea shuttles run from Andernos to Arcachon and from Cap Ferret to Arcachon.
The Passe Marée can also be used to reach Arcachon by sea, even at low tide, but it also offers trips around the basin, departing from Andernos.
On the basin side, you will find numerous small beaches between Arès and Andernos, but you will have to wait for high tide to swim, except at Lac de Saint Brice (Arès), a small reservoir on the basin, where you can swim whatever the tide.
With children, you will love Betey beach (Andernos), where you can enjoy a children's play area right on the beach, eat ice cream and crepes at the small beach bar, picnic in the shade of the pine trees and swim at high tide.
On the Atlantic side, Grand Crohot beach is the closest ocean beach to Andernos (about 15 minutes by car), but you will find a multitude of beaches, some more popular than others and some more accessible than others, along the kilometres of coastline offered by the Atlantic Ocean.
In summer, Cap 33 offers numerous free sports activities open to all (see the programme online).
If you like local markets, here is a list of nearby markets:
Arès Market: every Tuesday morning
Andernos Market: every Friday morning at the open-air and covered market (open depending on the season)
Lège Bourg Market: every Saturday morning.
Cap Ferret Market: every morning from mid-June to mid-September, and on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays the rest of the year.
Piraillan Market: every morning from mid-June to mid-September.
You can do your shopping in the supermarkets in Arès: Leclerc, Lidl and Carrefour City.
In both summer and winter, the basin is lively all year round thanks to local events:
The Arès oyster festival on the weekend of 15 August
Cabanes en fête on the first Saturday in December
The Andernos jazz festival at the end of July
Not to mention Lacanau, Soulac-sur-Mer, Bordeaux, the Médoc vineyards and their châteaux...
With rain or shine, cold or hot, high tide or low tide, as a couple or with the family... you'll always find something to do at the Bassin... and you'll always want to come back!
