Stylish, spacious two-storey flat from the 60s/70s 'golden age' of British modern architecture, full of light with sweeping views in funky South London's highest neighbourhood and 'best-kept secret' (Financial Times).
Crystal Palace is the highest point in South London. Last year the Financial Times cited this vibrant, cosmopolitan neighbourhood as 'London's best kept secret', while in April this year both the Wall Street Journal and the Sunday Times named it as one of their '10 Best Places to Live in London' - and it is. The balcony and roof terrace of our flat offer lovely, surprisingly wooded views toward Canary Wharf: at night, the red-lit skyscrapers and Crystal Palace tower sparkle like jewels as you enjoy a glass of wine or local craft beer or barbecue under the stars. The estate on which we live was designed by the British/Danish architect Rosemary Stjernstedt, the first woman to undertake such a grand housing project in Britain under the supervision of the great Ted Hollamby, a follower of William Morris. The environment is bracingly Modernist, in the 'Camden School' style (Humanist, not Brutalist) and won't be everyone's cup of tea, but is beautiful to lovers of Modern architecture like myself. The rear of this two-story, three-bedroomed maisonette, which feels more like a house than a flat, is entirely glass and thus full of light. A recent redecoration has left the interior even more full of pleasing mid-century period furniture and striking works by the Austin, Texas based painter Adde Russell, along with space artefacts, an extensive library, hi-end music system and huge collection of books and CDs (I started out as a music journalist). New beds, a smart new Miele fridge and 48" TV, extendable teak G Plan dining table and coloured Kartel ghost dining chairs add to the comfortable and aesthetically pleasing feel.
Guests will have use of the whole 90 sq metre (1,000 sq ft), 3-bedroom house apart from my study, which will be used for storage, including the wonderful roof terrace and the pleasant, planted balcony adjoining the living room, where I like to sit with coffee and a book or paper on sunny mornings when home. The well-appointed kitchen and large dining area with its extendable teak table and original 50s Sputnik chandelier has everything you could need for cooking or entertaining (including a steamer, slow cooker etc). The large Moon picture on the wall is a copy of one of the first photos ever taken of the Moon, by Nevil Story-Maskelyne in 1957, and was specially produced for me by the curators of the British Library - lots of this kind of stuff in the place. NB: check-in is given as 5pm in order to allow my fabulous cleaner Marcia time to ready the flat, but it is usually possible to accommodate guests' particular needs, either with earlier check-in or an arrangement to drop bags off before 5 while she works. Thanks to the key safe, late check in is no problem.
The house is well away from the main road, in a quiet location, and is surprisingly peaceful most of the time. That said, it is a city home in the beating heart of the most exciting city in the world, in a vibrant South London neighbourhood with city neighbours, exuberant kids etc, so silence is not always guaranteed - especially at weekends, when parties and barbecues in the neighbouring houses are not unheard of. Most of the time you'll get a remarkable degree of peace and quiet here if that's what you want, but I can't (and wouldn't want to) guarantee it at all times.
Guests will have the entire apartment to themselves.
