## Emplacement
Colombelles is a commune in the department of Calvados, in the Normandy region, 8 km northeast of Caen.
Its territory of 7 km² is located in the plain of Caen, between the Orne valley whose course is largely its "western" limit and a limestone plateau to the east.
The village appeared in the Middle Ages around its Romanesque church remained modest and rural until the early twentieth century, with less than 200 inhabitants in the 1906 census. A few years later, the industrialist August Thyssen bought land on the plateau overlooking the village and founded before the first war the Company of blast furnaces of Caen, which also encroaches on Mondeville. The company was later called the Société métallurgique de Caen. Colombelles quickly changed its face, gained in population and became one of the major hubs of the region’s industry.
The bombardments of 1944 strongly impact the commune. The city and its factory are rebuilt and find their prosperity a decade later.
The industrial complex closed in 1993. Since then, the locality has undergone a new transformation, with the redevelopment of the wasteland and the rehabilitation of its habitat.
Therefore, Colombelles, which now has 7,000 inhabitants, has a very extensive leisure offer to take into account during a stay in Normandy (...).
